USING X-WIN32, Version 5.1

X-Windows is, as its name implies, a windowing system that is used by UNIX. X-Win32 is an emulator that is used with Microsoft Windows (capital ‘W’). That is, X-Win32 translates commands from the UNIX system into something that Windows can understand.

To create a new session:

  1. Go to Start->Programs->X-Win32->X-Config
  2. Click on Add.
  3. Connect using rexec and click Next.
  4. Choose a Session Name…. Something like eagle.
  5. For host name enter eagle.cs.unc.edu
  6. In Command, type xterm -ls -display $DISPLAY
  7. Leave the login and password blank.
  8. Save.

 

 

Once you have the session created:

  1. Go to Start->Programs->X-Win32 (to execute the program. You should see a blue ‘X’ at the bottom right of your screen.
  2. Click once on the ‘X’ and choose ‘eagle’. You can also right-click to see a menu.
  3. Enter your login and password.
  4. Type exit from your UNIX account to quit.
  5. Right-click on the blue ‘X’ and choose Close to quit the X-Session.
